Facts about the Midnight Ramble

1. 1900 African Americans were leaving for the cities.

2. In the movie, black characters are often ignore or portray a certain way that African Americans have never seen before.

3. African Americans know more about the white cultures more than the white will ever know.

4. Many theaters have Midnight Ramble that last from !2:00 to 2:00 in the morning.

5. The black middle class love to have their pictures and want to create a certain image.

6. Blacks were always attacked in films, images, and stereotype.

Eisenstein and Hitchcock

The film techniques that Eisenstein use in the Odessa Sequence was tracking shot, high angle, low angle, close-up, medium shot, series of montage, pan, zooming in, and the eye-line match in the scene. The shower scene and the Odessa Sequence both uses high angle and low angle. Also they both uses montage and the expression on their faces pretty much tell the whole emotion. But the difference between the shower scene and the Odessa Sequence is that in the shower scene doesn't use the music to tell the story but in the Odessa Sequence it does. Also the Odessa Sequence depends mostly on the music to tell most of the story.

The Master of Suspense

Alfred Hitchcock was a master of suspense because he is able to use film techniques, actions, comedies, and sense of humor to create suspense and so that adds more of a suspenseful feeling and pull the audience into the movie even more because they want to know what is going to happen next. The film techniques that he use is high angle, tracking shot, cross-cutting, eye-line match, pan, zoom in, and a lot of medium shot to show what the neighbors are doing as he watch out the window in the movie Rear Window. Yes, I have noticed a lot of these film techniques through the movie and it kinds of bring you to get more interested and you can't wait to find out what is going to happen.

The Showdown

The showdown between the three guys were awesome because they uses a lot of close up on the faces, medium shot, continuous movement to show the gun and then back to the faces. There was also high angle, low angle, tracking shots, pan, and a lot of montage during the gun fight. I think the way that he continue to move continuous from one shot to the other was really amazing and I think that he got the idea from Einsenstein's movie Battleship Potemkin. The continuous movement creates a lot of suspense and you keep on wanting to know what is going to happen next in the movie. He reinvented this typical Western device by using film technique from Einsenstein.

Evolution of the Western

Western change over time by adding more of the music to go along with the movie. They also put more of the action according to the audience sense of appealing to violence, so that lead to stars such as Clint Eastwood to start to become the favorite star of most people. They also trued to experience with a lot of other thing. This reflect changes in the U.S. and maybe the world by showing us that people preferred more actions, violence, and more of cowboys chasing each other. It also show how the US and the world are gradually rejected the law of cinema and start to do their own little stuff.

Reinventing the Western

Some characteristics of Western film are cowboys, shooting between the protagonists and the antagonist, a lot of duel between people. Also some other characteristics of Western are film in the country and maybe in the 1979. The difference between The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and The Man who Shot Liberty Valance is that in the movie The Man who shot Liberty Valance didn't show who shot the other guy until the end when they have the flashback to what actually happens. While in the other movie, they face each other head on and settle their dispute and their revenge on each other.

Film Timeline and Film Techniques

We are in 1959, where the directors such as Truffaut and Godard direct their film. The next time period is 1968 and it is about how the Motion Picture Producers Association replaces the1930 Codes and the grading systems of movies are created. I think that jump cuts, mise-en-scene, tracking shot, wipe, eye-line match, high angle, low angle, medium shot, close-up are film techniques that are related to International Cinema.

Film Festival Reflection

I think that the movie Cost of a Soul is pretty good and very amazing because of the story plot that made it very interesting. I think that this is a very good movie and I would recommended this movie because it is truly mind-blowing and I would recommended because you just get so much into it that you actually get more interesting and then you just want to find out more and more. Yea, I think that we can connect to the class because there were a lot of film techniques and editing. No I think that I like it the way it is because it tells a lot of truth in Manhattan and so it is good to see how the neighborhood and cities is in Manhattan.

Iranian Cinéma

Iranian Cinema is unique because it shows the poverty of the country and how people are so poor and so it shows how people are doing and what they have to do in order to make money. I think that it is what makes it unique from other country cinema. It was influence and inspired by the war and the Germans movement and the Hong Kong movements.

Cinema in Iran

I know that Iran is pretty in bad shape because of the war and the Al-Queda and the Taliban in the Middle East. I also know that they have a lot of oil fields, but I did not know that they have cinema except for the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

Five things I learn was that they had a life just like us. They have the same food as we eat in the US and I learn there is a lot sand and I also learn that they face a life of hardship because they don't have a lot technology like the US.

DOGME 45 VS ITALIAN NEOREALISM

The rules of dogme 45 are:

1. Filming must be done on location. Props and sets must not be brought in.
2. The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa.
3. The camera must be a hand-held camera. Any movement or immobility attainable in the hand is permitted. The film must not take place where the camera is standing; filming must take place where the action takes place.
4. The film must be in colour. Special lighting is not acceptable.
5. Optical work and filters are forbidden.
6. The film must not contain superficial action.
7. Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden (that is to say that the film takes place here and now).
8. Genre movies are not acceptable.
9. The final picture must be transferred to the Academy 35mm, with an aspect ratio of 4:3, that is, not widescreen.
10. The director must not be credited.

I think that Dogme and Italian Neorealism is very different because Italian Neorealism is based on society problems and it is usually in black and white; while Dogme movies have to have colours and the director must not be credited for the things. Italian Neorealism credits the director and uses a lot of props while Dogme 45 doesn't want to use props, but uses just natural stuff.

Italian Neo-Realism

1. The origin of Italian Neo-Realism is in Italy when Mussolini got Italy under his thumbs. After WWII, Mussolini was Facist leader and it was a totalitarian government. The films of Italy show America has a paradise of the world and it shows that everyone want to live in it. It portray Americans lives as peaceful. People were shown the glories of their Roman past. The movie of Italy doesn't want to show Fascism and promote Socialism.

2. The American influences them because they used some of the idea from American films to create another movie, like film techniques, high angle, low angle, and a lot of other stuffd.

They have a lot in common and I think that there are a lot of difference too. The different b/w Hollywood and International movies is that International movies is spoken in the same language of the country and then have English subtitles. The International movies you can learn a lot more about the culture than movies that are made from Hollywood. In Hollywood movies, the hero always wins in the end and I think that it is getting tire. While in International movies, the hero can sometimes win or lose and it can sometimes have unexpected ending juts like Hollywood. Also their humor in International movies are very different because we might not get the joke, but the people do.

Method Acting

Method Acting is a way how make actors relaxed and let all of their tension go away, so that they can be responsive much quicker and get all the phobia of being on stage or on a set. It is also a way to prepare acting for their acting careers and learn the necessary things to become a good actor. Method Acting prepares actors to show emotion; facial expression, using hands and body to help drive the movie forward. The actors acting help the audience visualize and feel like that they are in the scene. I think that Method Acting is a really good way for actors to become better and become very good.

Marlon Brando

Marlon Brando's acting is pretty unique because he improvise along the way and he does a lot of movement with his hands. It is like a movie is being told using movement with some dialogue. For example, when he pick up the glove that Edie drop and then he short of improvise from there. I think he is a lot different from the other actors because he uses movement, improvise, throw stuff in there; unlike the other actors do what the director want them to do and they also act with the script and not thinking of new creative ways to help the audience understand the story better.
